The European Schools are schools created jointly by the governments of the Member States of the European Union (EU) to offer a multicultural and multilingual education, based on learning by competences and with a European dimension.
They are intended to give schooling, as a priority, to the children of officials of the EU institutions. Schools enjoy legal status as a public school in the respective countries in which they are located. They offer early childhood, primary and secondary education through a specific curriculum supervised by the Inspectorate of European Schools.
Students are grouped by language sections and, upon completion of secondary education, they obtain the European Baccalaureate degree, which grants them the same rights as the official national certificates and tests of the EU Member States.
